Welcome to Remarkable Resilience, a world where you can learn to thrive not just despite tough times but because of them.
Where you can learn that awful events don’t have to be the end of your life, but can give it new meaning and new purpose.
Where you can embrace (and even seek) adversity instead of fighting it. Where you can realise for yourself that for all the positive thinking you may do, there is nothing to replace positive action.
Where you can become aware of the tremendous inner resources you possess, honed in the forge of life’s challenges, and realise that you are, or can become, an inspiration for those around you.
Grow
I have spent years researching adversity and people’s responses to it. The blog contains ancient wisdom and some of the latest in psychological research. There’s hard evidence and anecdotes too. There are the experiences of some people you will have heard of and some you won’t. I hope what you read is both accessible and convincing. Intuitively, I think you’ll find it makes sense when compared to your own experiences of adversity. I’ve thrown in my own experiences too, of many, many years of ill-health and my responses to it. I feel I’ve grown a lot and I think you can too.
Learn
Most of all, I want you to be able to learn, which is why I’ve included so many tips, techniques, learning points, challenges, questions and links to further learning.
And you’ll very often see this guy, my friend Wacky Dai, at the side of the page, pointing out tips and making suggestions to help with your learning.
I want you to put what you learn into practice and develop good habits from it, so I’ve set up a Facebook page, to link up with like-minded individuals who want to incorporate these principles into their daily lives and be supported in doing so.
Who For
Some people have asked me, “Who is this blog meant for? What kind of adversity do you have to have been through to benefit?” The answer is, you decide. I don’t really believe in levels of life challenges. Simply because, say, tough times at work are very common, does not mean the impact on you could not be as severe as someone going through a bereavement. The mental and physiological reactions could be very similar, especially if the former is prolonged.
So, it’s for everyone and anyone who feel they could benefit. It’s for people with life-changing injuries and people who have been made redundant. It’s for people still suffering after years of challenges and people who have yet to face them. I think it’s a blog for anyone who believes that they will meet adversity, that they can make the right choices in response and want to be an inspiration to those around them.
Take Responsibility
It’s about tough times but even tougher people. It’s about adversity, misfortune and the life challenges which we all face at one time or another. But it’s also about making an ally of that adversity and a friend of our misfortune. It’s about realising that no matter what change, challenge or crisis happens in our lives, there is also a choice in how we respond. Even if what has happened is not our fault, we can still take responsibility for what happens next. And if we want to make the most of life, we must take responsibility and thereby take back at least some control of our futures.
